Cervical Disk Herniation

Often starting unexpectedly, cervical disk herniation symptoms commonly appear that cause pain to radiate along the pathway of the cervical nerve all the way down the arm. While cervical disk herniation can certainly be caused by some sort of sudden trauma to the cervical spine, it typically arises with spontaneous arm pain. When the herniated disc material is pinching or pressing on the cervical nerve, the patient will feel pain, tingling, and numbness down the arm and through the fingertips. More often than not, cervical disk herniation can be treated with non-surgical treatments and medication. Through a number of modified activities, the weakness and pain is addressed and overcome through specific exercises executed by our experienced physical therapists and chiropractors.

Pinched Nerves

Pinched nerve injuries range significantly from minor to severe and can be either temporary or long-term depending upon the extent of damage. As such, recognizing the signs and symptoms associated with pinched nerves early is imperative, as early treatment is important to quick relief from nerve compression. Whether a pinched nerve comes from repetitive motions or from holding a part of the body in a position for an extended period of time, nerve compression can cause great pain as nerves have little protection from soft tissue. Typically, a nerve is pinched between tissues such as the tendons, ligaments, or bones and is often suffered in the wrist, elbow, hand, or fingers. Radiating pain, numbness, weakness, and a “pins and needles” sensation are the most common symptoms of pinched nerves. Physical therapy is a phenomenal way to overcome pinched nerve pain. Using stretches to strengthen the muscles, our chiropractors are able to relieve pain safely.

Upper Crossed Syndrome

A commonly suffered muscle imbalance syndrome, upper crossed syndrome (UCS) refers to tightness located on the upper trapezius and levator scapula with a crossing tightness of the pectoralis major and minor. In addition, upper crossed syndrome is associated with weakness in the cervical flexors crossed with weakness in lower and middle trapezius. When this type of imbalance occurs, joint dysfunction occurs as these muscles are prone to tightness. With a low irritability threshold, abnormal movement patterns can impact joint surfaces and may lead to eventual joint degeneration. Treating upper crossed syndrome concentrates on treating the source of the pain to eventually counter the muscle imbalance.

Arthritis

Approximately 50 million Americans are currently suffering from arthritis and, in contrast to a common misconception, arthritis actually affects a wide range of individuals, not just the elderly. The most common diseases that are forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis, juvenile arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. As such a widespread disease, arthritis pain is linked to a range of joint disorders that are caused by inflammation. Daily wear and tear is one of the most common causes of arthritis that causes muscle strain by movements against rigid joints. Pain and swelling are often the most easily recognize symptoms of arthritis, in addition to aching. While there is no true cure for arthritis, pain management is achieved through physical therapy for long-term pain relief.

Burners / Stingers

Burners and stingers are amongst the most commonly suffered sports injuries. Often caused by some sort of contact or collision, burners and stingers are typically temporary yet painful. Named for the burning/stinging feeling that travels from the shoulder to the hand, burners and stingers are marked by an injury to the upper arm’s nerve supply (at the neck or at the shoulder). While sports injuries are most often linked to burners and stingers, spinal stenosis is another common cause. When burners and stingers last for several days, it is imperative to work with a physical therapist to concentrate on rehabilitating the strength and motion of the arm muscles.

Whiplash

Whiplash is an incredibly common neck injury, most often associated with rear-end motor vehicle collisions. When the head is abruptly moved backward and then forward, the extreme motions cause severe pain when the ligaments and neck muscles are pushed beyond their normal range of motion. Ranging from mild to severe, whiplash injuries are recognized by symptoms such as neck stiffness, pain, dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, and fatigue. When pain is so severe that head movement is difficult or when the pain spreads to other areas such as the arms or shoulders, treatment should be sought immediately. Physical therapy is an excellent way to reduce pain and strengthen the neck muscles.
