Mid-Back Pain

Millions of Americans suffer from back pain on a daily basis. In fact, approximately 50 percent of all working Americans experience back pain symptoms each year. While commonly seen in the form of upper or lower back pain, mid-back pain is an injury that is much less recognized yet potentially just as much painful. Not only is mid-back pain uncomfortable, if severe enough it may cause a disruption in normal, everyday activity. Ranging significantly from dull and aching pains to severe and sharp shooting pains, mid-back pain goes through the body’s spine and often causes serious discomfort.

Medical experts approximate that every individual will experience some type of back problem throughout their lifetime. As such a widespread ailment, it is important to understand the signs and symptoms associated with mid-back pain in order to seek care at an appropriate time. Those who wait to seek medical attention for their mid-back pain run the risk of worsening the injury and, as a result, prolonging recovery time.

The following are some of the most common causes of mid-back pain:

Postural Awareness

Muscular imbalances are one of the most direct causes of back problems. One of the greatest misconceptions is that back pain arises from some type of overexertion or hard physical labor. On the contrary, however, many of the most common causes of mid-back pain stems from poor posture. The skeleton as a whole is designed in order to hold up the body even with gravity’s pull, without using much energy. When a person has poor posture, the muscles are tasked with the job of the skeleton, placing great pressure on areas that are not equipped to withstand such stress.

Inefficient movements are the major cause of back pain due to poor posture. As such, postural awareness is critical for relieving mid-back pain. Ergonomics play an essential role in encouraging the body to perform proper mechanics. From using a modified work station to changing the height of a counter, even the slightest adjustments may make a great contribution to healing mid-back pain. Becoming more aware of one’s body movements places them in a position to correct poor posture and alleviate mid-back pain.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis refers to a lateral curvature in the spine, which is normally a straight vertical line. Affecting anywhere from 5 to 7 million Americans today, scoliosis is typically developed between the ages of 10 and 15 and the cause is unknown in 80 percent of the cases. While the majority of scoliosis cases are mild, those cases that are severe can become disabling. In many cases of scoliosis there is no need for treatment, however, if the curvature gets worse treatment may be necessary to correct the spine.

Monitoring scoliosis is critical to ensuring that the issue does not worsen. As such, being of aware of the symptoms most common to scoliosis is important to take preventative measures to treat the issue. The following are some of the most common signs of scoliosis:

  • Uneven waist
  • One of the shoulder blades seems more prominent than the other
  • Uneven shoulders
  • One side of the hip is higher than the other

As stated before, treatment is not necessary for the majority of children with scoliosis. However, depending upon the severity a doctor may prescribe treatment based upon a number of factors from maturity to sex to location of the curve. If the scoliosis progresses in time, surgery may be required to correct the curvature.
