Headaches / Migraines

According to the National Headache Foundation, approximately 28 million Americans suffer from migraines. Often described as a debilitating headache, migraines are typically linked to a strong sensitivity to light, nausea, and vomiting. While genetic causes may contribute to the onset of migraine headaches, there are a variety of specific triggers that play a role as well. However, it is important to note that an exact set of causes are unknown.

Females are particularly susceptible to migraines and headaches. In fact, about 25 percent of all women suffer from at least four migraine attacks per month. Regardless of gender, however, migraines can truly impact a person’s quality of life. Lasting anywhere from four hours to three days or longer, those who suffer migraines are often forced to miss out on previously planned activities and events, as migraines typically come on unannounced.

Identifying migraine triggers is often the first step in reducing their presence. Speaking to an experienced chiropractor will help to determine various exercises, dietary changes, and relaxation techniques. Migraine Causes & Symptoms

To reiterate, the exact causes of severe headaches and migraines are unknown, however, there are certainly identifiable triggers that those susceptible to migraines should recognize. While the same trigger factors may be different for each individual, they typically remain the same. Therefore, those who suffer from migraines are encouraged to being a migraine diary. Writing down weather changes, dietary changes, and other factors will help to shed light on your personal triggers.

The following are some of the most common causes of migraines and headaches:

  • Bright lights
  • Changes in weather
  • Fatigue
  • Skipping meals
  • Caffeine
  • Emotional stress
  • Alterations in sleep patterns
  • Menstrual period

Scientists have identified that the migraine generator in the brain is caused by hyperactive nerve cells sending out signals to the blood vessels, which then cause them to constrict and then expand. When this occurs, serotonin, prostaglandins, and other inflammatory matters trigger pulsation and thus pain in the brain.

A variety of medical conditions are also associated with the onset of migraines and severe headaches. Conditions such as sleep disorders, asthma, hypertension, stroke, chronic fatigue syndrome, and Raynaud’s phenomenon are linked to migraines. In addition, much research points to hereditary factors contributing to migraines.

The following are some of the most common symptoms of migraine headaches:

  • Blurred vision
  • Throbbing or pounding headaches
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness

Treating a migraine varies depending upon the person, as there is no true cure. Nevertheless, there are a number of available drugs that may help to prevent or treat some type of migraines. In addition, many migraine sufferers have found success in stress management with chiropractic care. When paired with dietary changes, adjusting the body is an excellent way to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

TMJ

Temporomandibular joint disorder, more commonly known as TMJ, is associated with pain in the jaw joint as well as the muscles controlling jaw movement. While determining the causes of TMJ is difficult, there are several common preceptors. For instance, grinding teeth or clenching the jaw may trigger a TMJ disorder. However, many people who do one or both of those things never suffer from TMJ. Jaw injuries and arthritis are also linked to TMJ disorders.

Nonsurgical treatment is typically suggested for TMJ sufferers. If pain and/or tenderness are identified in the jaw, it is important to speak to a doctor. Oftentimes, stress management and physical therapy are wonderful ways to deter the pains linked to TMJ. If you have suffered from jaw tenderness or pain, it is important to address the issue immediately. Please contact Campbell Sports Rehab and Spine Center to learn more today.
